Every transition question tests the relationship between two ideas. Hide the answer choices first and name that relationship in your own words.
Four relationships to recognize
- Contrast: however, by contrast, nevertheless.
- Cause or result: therefore, consequently, thus.
- Addition: moreover, furthermore, similarly.
- Example: for example, specifically, for instance.
Worked example
The coating is extremely thin. _____, it protects the metal for years.
The second idea is surprising relative to the first, so a contrast transition such as nevertheless fits. “Therefore” would incorrectly claim that thinness causes durability.
After choosing, reread both sentences with the transition. Your answer should express the relationship exactly, not merely sound fluent.
